The Onset of Gamma-ray Burst Afterglow

چکیده
Wediscuss the reference time t0 of afterglow light curves in the context of the standard internal-external shockmodel. The decay index of early afterglow is very sensitive to the reference time one chooses. In order to understand the nature of early afterglow, it is essential to take a correct reference time. Our simple analytic model provides a framework for understanding special relativistic effects involved in early afterglow phase. We evaluate light curves of reverse shock emission as well as those of forward shock emission, based on full hydrodynamic calculations. We show that the reference time does not shift significantly even in the thick-shell case. For external shock emission components, measuring times from the beginning of the prompt emission is a good approximation and it does not cause an early steep decay. In the thin-shell case, the energy transfer time from fireball ejecta to ambient medium typically extends to thousands of seconds. This might be related to the shallow decay phases observed in early X-ray afterglow at least for some bursts. Subject headingg s: gamma rays: bursts — hydrodynamics — relativity

Early optical polarization of a gamma-ray burst afterglow.
We report the optical polarization of a gamma-ray burst (GRB) afterglow, obtained 203 seconds after the initial burst of gamma-rays from GRB 060418, using a ring polarimeter on the robotic Liverpool Telescope. Our robust (2sigma) upper limit on the percentage of polarization, less than 8%, coincides with the fireball deceleration time at the onset of the afterglow. The combination of the rate o...

In this paper we present BeppoSAX and XMM-Newton observations of two long Gamma-ray bursts, the X-ray rich event of December 11, 2001 (GRB011211) and the hard and very bright event of November 21, 2001 (GRB011121). In both events we find evidence of a late X-ray burst, taking place several minutes after the prompt emission. In the November burst the spectrum of the X-ray burst is much softer th...
متن کاملThe Rapidly Fading Afterglow from the Gamma - Ray Burst of 1999
We report on the discovery of the radio afterglow from the gamma-ray burst (GRB) of 1999 May 6 (GRB 990506) using the Very Large Array (VLA). The radio afterglow was detected at early times (∆t = 1.5 days), but began to fade rapidly sometime between 1 and 5 days after the burst. If we attribute the radio emission to the forward shock from an expanding fireball, then this rapid onset of the deca...
متن کاملA Simple, Stringent Test on the Nature of Grbs' Progenitors
I show here that the time–delay between the gamma ray burst proper and the onset of the afterglow is a sensitive function of the surrounding density, going from ≈ 10 s for typical disk densities to several hours for IGM densities. Since bulk Lorenz factor, explosion energy and environment density can be simultaneously determined from observations of the time–delay and of the afterglow, afterglo...

We investigate the consequences of a continuously injecting central engine on the gamma-ray burst afterglow emission, focusing more specifically on a highly-magnetized millisecond pulsar engine. For initial pulsar parameters within a certain region of the parameter space, the afterglow lightcurves are predicted to show a distinctive achromatic bump feature, the onset and duration of which range...

We investigate the possible consequences of a continously injecting central engine on the Gamma-Ray Burst afterglow emission, focusing more specifically on the possibility that the central source is a highlymagnetized millisecond pulsar. If the initial parameters of the pulsar are within a certain region of the surface field rotation period parameter space, the burst afterglow lightcurves are p...
